How to design a water tank & find out the volume of water

Construction Software

In this construction video tutorial, you will be familiar with the processes for designing a rectangular water tank as well as volume of necessary water contained in the tank.

The design and calculation are done for a family having 4 members.

According to IS code, 135 litres of water are required for each person each day.

The break-up of 135 litres is given below :-

Drinking = 5 litres
Cooking = 5 litres
Bathing and toilet = 85 litres
Washing clothes = 30 litres
Cleaning house = 10 litres

For 4 members, the required quantities of water = 135 x 4 = 650 litres each day.

It is known that, 1m3 = 1000 litres of water

Follow the steps, given below, to determine the size of water tank for above quantities :-

1m3 = 1000 litres

1 litre = 0.001 m3 (after dividing with 1000)

The requirement of water is 650 litres

So, 650 litres = 0.65 m3

Suppose, the depth of water tank = 0.6 m

The size of the water tank containing 650 litres water is taken as follow :-

L = 1.47 m, B = 0.74 m, d = 0.6 m

So, the volume of the water tank is determined as L x B x d = 1.47 x 0.74 x 0.6 = 0.65 m3
