Derivation of 1.54 for concrete and 1.27 for mortar

Construction Software

This construction video tutorial sheds light on derivation of 1.54 for concrete and 1.27 for mortar at the time of working out the quantities of concrete & mortar.

For concrete in 1m3 = 54%

Dry volume will be calculated as follow :-

Wet volume + 54% of wet volume

= 1 + (54/100 x1) = 1 + 0.54 (1 = 1 cubic meter)

So, dry volume = 1.54

For cement mortar in 1m3 = 27% or 33%

Dry volume = Wet volume + 27% of Wet volume

= 1 + (27/100 x1) = 1 + 0.27 (1 = 1 cubic meter)

Therefore, dry volume = 1.27

N.B. In concrete, the sizes of aggregates come in very large size and lots of air is included in it.

On the other hand the mortar is formed with cement and sand and no air voids present there. So, dry volume is always less in mortar as compared to concrete.

To view the graphical demonstration of it, go through the following video tutorial.
