Simple method to find out the cutting length of the triangular stirrups

Construction Software

This is an exclusive video tutorial for civil engineering students where they will learn how to determine the cutting length of triangular stirrups.

Here, the size of the where the stirrups are provided is 300 x 400 mm

The three sides of the triangular stirrups are taken as A, B and C

Clear cover of the stirrups is taken as 40 mm

Diameter of the stirrups is taken as 8 mm

Bending is provided as 135 degree

To determine the cutting length of the triangular stirrups, the following formula is used :-
2 x (c + a + 2 numbers of hooks – 4 numbers of 135 degree bend

In short form, the above formula can be written as 2 x c + a + (2 x 10d) – 4 x 3d

Now, it is required to find the value of side a and c.

The value of side ‘a’ will be determined as follow :-
a = 300 – 2 x clear cover = 300 – 2 x 40 = 220 mm (as width of the column = 300 mm)

The value of side ‘b’ will be determined as follow :-
b = 400 – 2 x clear cover = 400 – 2 x 40 = 320 mm (as height of the column = 400 mm)

Now, the value of side ‘c’ can be determined with the following formula :-
c = √(a/2)2 + (320)2 = √1102 + 3202 = 338.37 mm

Now, put the above values in the formula :-
= 2 x 338.37 + 220 + (2 x 10 x 8) – (4 x 3 x 8) = 676.74 + 220 + 160 – 96 = 960.74 mm = 0.960 meter

So, the cutting length of the rectangular stirrups is 960.74 mm or 0.960 meter
